SEND

Surrey Maths School is equipped to support students with a variety of Special Education Needs and Disabilities. We are open, inclusive and accessible to all. Our only requirement is an aptitude for and a love of maths. Beyond that, we work with parents, carers and students to ensure that we support each and every young person to settle into life here at SuMS. Every learner is different and we work to ensure that our SEND support is personalised, bespoke, and meets the needs of all pupils.  

Meet the SENDCo 

Sarah BourneMrs Bourne has been the SENDCo at Surrey Maths School since opening in 2024. She was a classroom teacher for sixteen years and then worked for the Inclusion Team at her previous setting - an outstanding local school. She has extensive experience of SEND in all walks of her life and she has particular interest and expertise in neurodivergence, specifically autism.  

Mrs Bourne holds the National Professional Qualification for SENCOs and she is a Lead Trainer of the Cygnet Course, a support and information programme for parents of autistic children aged 5-18. She also works as a Lead Practitioner for Learning Partners Academy Trust, which involves supporting other schools and SENDCOs.

Transition into SuMS  

We recognise the importance of a smooth transition and understand that starting in a new setting can be a time of both excitement and anxiety. During the second half of the summer term, Mrs Bourne will contact the parents of all offer holders to offer them the opportunity to meet online to discuss any SEND needs. Students are very welcome to join in the conversation if they would like to. This has proved invaluable in terms of getting to know students and parents and allows us to pass key information to teaching staff ahead of term starting in September. Once enrolled, students will meet with Mrs Bourne in the first term to co-author their Individual Education Plan. These are then shared with staff and parents and are regularly reviewed and updated.  

EHCP Students  

We have successfully supported young people from both mainstream and specialist provision to thrive at Surrey Maths School. The general admissions process is the same for all students, and so those with an EHCP will need to make an application to the school in the usual way. Mrs Bourne visits all applicants with an EHCP in their secondary settings in the spring or summer term before enrolment.  

What might support look like?  

Our approach at SuMS is needs-led. We communicate with students and parents regularly, helping us to form a holistic picture of the young person and identify appropriate supports and strategies collaboratively. Much of the support provided is part of our standard offer, accessible to all students as and when required - please see the table here.
