Secondary
Our Secondary Outreach Programme
Enhancing KS3 mathematical engagement requires a continued focus on collaborative, hands-on learning that connects new concepts to prior knowledge. With this in mind, we’ve developed a number of experiences, from our series of lessons for Year 7 Girls focussed on cryptography to our competitive annual Team Challenge day.
Our Year 10 activities are designed to look beyond the classroom and support students in actively pursuing STEM subjects post-16 and beyond. Our one-off workshops provide students with the opportunity to delve into more subject specific topics and begin to get a feel for how the topics they’re studying now progress. Our annual Women in STEM Summer School provides female students a space to push their thinking, interactive with incredible role models and build confidence in subjects where they may feel under-represented.

Cracking The Code

Women are still disproportionately represented in the STEM community and unfortunately female students often do not see themselves as capable mathematicians. Across seven sessions, we hope to celebrate female contributions in cryptography through activities which challenge and extend, creating opportunities for Year 7 girls to develop a sense of belonging, improve individual confidence, collaboration and motivation in Mathematics.

STEM Showcase
Are you curious about our subjects beyond mathematics? Want to experience a day in the life of a SuMS student?
Our annual STEM Showcase provides passionate Year 10 students with an opportunity to have a taster session in Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Computer Science. Through practical activities, we hope attendees gain a better understanding of not only how these subjects progress from GCSE but also the unique way they are delivered at SuMS. SuMS Step Up
SuMS Step Up supports ambitious KS5 students looking to explore challenging problems beyond the A Level curriculum and prepare for university admissions tests, including STEP, TMUA and MAT.
Through a series of rich mathematical problems, SuMS teachers guide students to develop the mathematical thinking, resilience and confidence needed to tackle unfamiliar questions. Students strengthen their reasoning skills whilst gaining valuable experience of the style and depth of questions encountered in university admissions assessments and future mathematical study.
