Surrey Maths School (SuMS) today celebrated a major milestone with the opening of its permanent building in Guildford, welcoming students to their new home for the first time. The purpose-built facility offers state-of-the-art classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, and specialist areas designed to support high-level mathematical study, enrichment, and pastoral care.

This marks the start of a new chapter for the specialist sixth form college, which opened in September 2024 to provide exceptional mathematics education to 16-19 year old students from across Surrey and beyond. The new building reflects Surrey Maths School’s ambition to deliver an exceptional learning environment that nurtures academic excellence, creativity, and independence. An A-Level provider, all students at SuMS take Maths and Further Maths alongside up to two options from Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Computer Science. It also delivers Outreach work for students in Years 5 - 13 through programmes aiming to widen participation in the mathematical sciences.

Having spent 18 months on their temporary site, it is a joy for students and staff alike to move into their permanent home near the train station as students travel from far and wide to attend the school. SuMS is filled with like-minded individuals who find their educational home and celebrates its strong sense of community, which this new building will only encourage and allow the school to deepen.

SuMS' Co-Headteachers said: “Opening our permanent home is an incredibly proud moment for the whole school community. This building gives our students an inspiring environment in which to learn, explore, and develop their passion for the mathematical sciences. We are thrilled to finally welcome students into a space that reflects our values, ambition, and commitment to excellence.”

Students expressed excitement at the move, praising the modern facilities and welcoming atmosphere. One student commented: “It feels amazing to finally be here. The building is bright, spacious, and motivating – it really makes you want to learn.”

Surrey Maths School, part of the national network of specialist maths schools, works closely with the University of Surrey, industry partners, and local schools from within the Learning Partners Academy Trust and beyond to widen participation in advanced mathematics and prepare students for leading universities and careers in STEM.

The opening of the permanent site represents a significant investment in the future of maths education in Surrey, strengthening Guildford’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence and innovation.
